Connector cannot create Assignments on PS

Hi Lenny

We have been struggling to get our connector to work properly for a couple of days - from install failures that didn't fail the install to access issues. However, we think we are close to getting the connector to work. When we create the project association, the project link is created (I can see it in the connector DB) but the connector cannot create Assignments on the Project Server (we selected "auto-create assignments from workitems).

When we check the logs we see that when the connector tries to create an assignment

Creating new assignment via Statusing API for task 'Set up: Migration of Work Items', project 'Project Agile', assignment '243a8be6-afbc-4c80-b5d2-878ffdf421eb'

the very next log is an error log. The message is:
An exception occurred trying to create a new assignment via the Statusing APIs: Client found response content type of 'text/html; charset=utf-8', but expected 'text/xml'.

The error that comes back (in html) is the dreaded generic "Error" page that Sharepoint spews on errors.

We then checked the Sharepoint tracelog and found this error:
Application error when access /SharedServices/psi/statusing.asmx, Error=The file /SharedServices/psi/statusing.asmx does not exist.

SharedServices is the name of our SSP.

Can you help?

We finally figured out what the problem was - it was some ambiguity over what is meant by SSP. When we installed Project Server, you have to create an SSP in the sharepoint site and assign a port for this application. This is the SSP admin site. Meanwhile, Office Server has created a SharedServices webservice on the project server box. When the Connector install runs, we thought the SSP meant the admin site instead of the webservice. Once we figured out that SSP meant the webservice, the connector worked like a charm.

We think it would help if you improved the installer to fail if something goes wrong (I posted previously about a timeout error that occurred when the installer registered event handlers and custom fields on Project Server not causing an error message in the installer) so that if something like the above error happens, the install will fail.
